The Space in Between , (2023)
Trinity Square Video, Toronto, ON
Mediums: Contact microphones, relational art, vibrotactile transducers, access menu
The Space in Between invites you to imagine the possibilities of what a gallery can be. The project started with the development of an access menu that outlined the possible access features available, as well as invited questions about the desires and dreams for a gathering space.
The Space in Between was a series of gatherings that took place in the summer of 2023. In July, Salima transformed Trinity Square Video into a living room with comfortable furniture. She invited about 30 artists from Toronto’s Mad/Deaf/Disability arts community to come, relax and have an informal conversation over a meal. Over 10 gatherings were held over 2 weeks, and contact microphones were used to capture the little mundane sounds of being together, such as glasses clinking, laughter and bubbles from foot baths.
These gatherings were audio recorded and transformed into a multisensory listening experience using a vibrotactile installation open to the public.
